Zinnias make out in a rainbow of unlike colors . In 2020 , I purchased a small bundle of very special zinnia seeds from Dawn Creek Farm , where they had been working for years to breed soft - colored zinnias . I bought their unparalleled intermixture of source from that projection .

We farm those seed in 2021 . We isolated them from all other old maid flower , so they would cross - pollinate with each other but not with other , brighter - colour zinnias . There were also differences in the colors of the zinnias ’ centre saucer . The unopened disc florets in the very centre showed up in dissimilar colors , as did the hoop of open disc floweret .
These two flowers share the same petal color , but the top one ’s opened disk florets are brilliant white-livered , and the unopened center disk is a bright red . The bottom flower ’s center disk and disk floweret are more muted purple colors . These differences make the blooms feel very dissimilar from each other . I put organza bag over these blooms and came out with a paintbrush to spread pollen by hand .
Pollinating the zinnia by hand was very tedious . I also read that the plants ’ pollen was at its fresh around noon , when I was unremarkably at the farm and not home to pollinate . So I eventually ditched the bags and left the pollination up to the bees .

Leaving these plants to open - pollinate with each other does mean that we ’ll have less control over the heyday that appear yr .
As I ’ve save seeds from our zinnias this year , I have go along the colour separate , but I only get laid the seed parents for each seed we save and not the pollen parent . 50 % of the genetics are left up to fortune !
There are ways of set apart item-by-item plant from each other and trapping pollinator inside to promise that only the colors you need to get baffle with each other . Perhaps next class , we will try one of those scheme . Zinnias have two types of seeded player . One eccentric of seed forms at the ends of the old maid ’ petals . These are the electron beam seeded player , and they form from hybridizing - pollination .

The little thread - similar thing in the persona below have a sticky finishing that collects pollen from visiting bee , and that ’s what pollinates the seed at the end of each petal . The other type of zinnia seeded player is a self - pollinate seed , so it may or may not produce a viable flora . These seed are disk seeds , and they constitute in the core of the zinnia flower caput . They have a dissimilar form and color from the ray seeds .
