Drought and freeze survivors|Big Red Sun|No-kill trees

By golly , I have more plants in the dry land than in the compost stack . Some look a little scent after this arduous run , but if they made it through 2011 , they can deal anything . One is mySalvia microphylla‘La Trinidad Pink ’ .

It ’s only been here since after last Thanksgiving , but with a hard halt and drouth in its first untried year , it plans to to stick around for more !

I ’ll apportion other survivors in the next few week . For now , my Hymenocallis ‘ Sulphur Queen ’ wanderer lilies and bamboo muhly ( Muhlenbergia dumosa ) assume a weather badge of virtue . SQ did n’t bloom this summer as always , but her strappy leaves betoken she ’s banking on the hereafter with work underground .

MyChrysanthemum pacificumstarted as a petite passalong division . I really feared for its destiny , but it sure as shooting did n’t . Since I ’m always on the outlook for silver medal , its edges won me over !

For many years , I hesitated about yuccas since I ’m on clay soil . But since I ’ve amended it over the year with foliage , compost , and mulch , I take up a chance . Plus , I just had to have some more silver!Yucca pallidaand this one , Yucca rupicolaxpallida , bounce off whatever halt or drought come their way .

This week on CTG , they ’re two of the plants that Tom and Justin Kasulka fromBig Red Suninclude in their conversation focused on some stalwarts that wo n’t get you down in try times .

Yes , Big Red Sun is back !   They ’ve just go down the street , quick to partake in their great ideas with you !

Justin show off some designs and plant life that make it through drought AND halt .

I love this image of one of Justin ’s designs : Agave parryiwith Knock Out rose and nanus yaupon .

Justin has lots of tips for you !   I was grateful to find out that yuccas are n’t thrilled about being move , so I was really glad that the guy rope who fixed my sewer piping carefully worked around it .

Daphne ’s choice of the weekis Gopher flora ( Euphorbia rigida ) , a drought tolerant succulent that sniff at cold , too . It does require perfect drain , so for me , I would put it in a peck where it can cascade down its atomic number 47 . For you folks on well - drained spots , its anatomy , grain and ash gray are delicious complements to Justin ’s design above or softer upright grasses and flowering perennials .

On go , we head up to Muellerto visit Betsy Hilton and Joe Denton , who did n’t give up much when they traded a large rental garden for a National Wildlife Backyard habitat in their young ( smaller ) digs .   I have it off Joe ’s creativity for a birdbath stand !

You ’ll also apprise how he and his son rent out the backyard pasturage , deal with drain issues and created a multi - tiered garden and good-time quad for this locality of true residential area gardener neighbour .

Update : here ’s an October   vase of their waterwise roses Joe brought from their former family :   Maggie , Perle de Jardin , Excellenz von Schubert , Dome deCouer , and The Fairy .

Drought or no , it ’s time to plant trees . With bridge player - watering , it ’s much better to prove them in cool weather . But , so many citizenry kill their tree diagram the first day they lend them home . For sure , it can take a duet of years , but it ’s well-heeled to avoid future grief withTrisha Shirey ’s tips this week , part 1 of how not pour down your trees !

Two things I ’ll mention from Trisha : take out gunny and wires from balled and burlap Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree . The roots will just wind around and around and eventually asphyxiate the tree .

The same applies to container plant with girdled roots . Ideally , leave them at the nursery . Since many do have winding roots , be sure to cut them off and broadcast them out .

Years ago , I permit someone else set a tree for me ( I usually do it myself ) . It took 7 twelvemonth for me to learn that the antecedent were girdled . To make it even worse , it had been implant too deeply — the etymon flare up below ground . It languish for two years before its demise . forecast it needed more water , I provided it . Finally , I brought in an tree surgeon to analyze it and he gave me the lamentable truth . So , that ’s a painful lesson we need to save you !

Next , condition to see how bighearted the tree will growto avoid a next hit with power line . As we all jazz , the consequences can be disruptive if not downright disastrous .

So , what about those lawns ?

Indeed , this is a hot topic , but well - manage lawns are not off the chart as soothing spaces and play orbit for children and pets .   Every autumn , we get question about “ winterizer ” fertilizer . This week , Daphne answersMark Banigan ’s great question about what that means , when should we enforce fertilizer , and should we do it this year ?
