After last weeks bowl shop , North American Rock Garden Society appendage Elisabeth Zander , invited us and a few other guests to her home and garden which was twenty minutes away fromRobin Magowan’sgarden , in Goshen , Ct . Do you know that palpate you get when you suddenly see that you are about to see something sinful ? That ’s how we felt up , when labor into the driveway at the Elisabeth ’s home . Massive rock , limestone and granite lined the property and we ’re placed everywhere , since her husbandRod Zanderis a stone mason , a craftsman really , and a well have it away constructor of masonry ( stone ) warmer which we have never heard of , but which we found to be an amazinggreen ’ choice to our old crude furnace . Be indisputable to check these out , for they have stir up alpine lodges in Germany and Switzerland for generations , and they work . Rod is one of the few , if not the only person in the US who builds them . When your hubby is a illustrious stone James Neville Mason , phantasy can become reality . determine out Elisabeth ’s rock grit layer in her beautiful glass greenhouse . I need , I want!Elisabeth ’s garden was amazing , with a long , crevice garden built by Czech Crevice Garden and Saxifrage expert Zdeněk Zvolánek complete with tons , if not a couple of hundred ash grey saxifrage crossbreed and species , and an amazing assemblage of Ramonda seedling ( a colony , really ) which would make any plant enthusiast more than jealous ( Ramonda are grouchy high alpine relatives of the African Violet family , super challenge to grow unless you have the perfect smirch , ( I have kept one and a half plants , awake in a trough for two years now ) , but Elisabeth had , oh , I do n’t sleep with , about fifty which she started from cum . For alpine nurseryman , it ’s like a chef saying “ Oh , I brought two whitened truffles back from France last calendar week ” , and another saying ” Oh those ? We have so many in the back Mrs. Henry Wood that we apply them as golf game balls ” . She distinctly is an expert at cultivating alpine industrial plant , but then again , that should come as no surprisal to those who have seen her name in Rock Garden and Alpine journals .
I peculiarly loved the Zander ’s home , for it was one of those homes where even if you never run across the owners , you just smell that they were interesting and odd . Not picky , nor curated , rather it communicated that very interesting people lived here . An astonishing ornate Victorian mutitiered plant stand , well worn oriental carpets , botanical Book , the warmth of pure , unfussy rock and ancient wood floors all felt arrant . The Zander ’s garden view , while under major construction , as we were admonish , still offered the horticulturist plenty of things to look at . You know what I stand for , not exactly a contrive garden , instead , it ’s an interesting one . The plants and gemstone are thoughtfully placed , and when complete , everything will hold out in harmony . This sort of ‘ blueprint ’ is n’t gather in a day , or in seven . It must be thoughtfully and consciously ‘ craft ’ , and that is the sensory faculty I had while look at Elisabeth ’s garden . Even on a parky autumn twenty-four hours , there was alot to see . A Thyme topple over a massive rockEphedra ( yeah , it ’s really a plant too ) , pound over a boulder looks a but like a prospect from under the sea . Ramonda ’s are well rooted in the Czech crack garden . I can only think these when they are in full prime .
The Zander ’s unfermented Australian Shepherd keep on guard . A Ligularia dentata shout ‘ Look , yellow ! ’ against the turning folio , who were only , sort of wispering it at this point .
