Better Homes & Gardens spoke with the actress , singer , manufacturer , and author — who add chief brand director to her impressive CV withBelow 60 ° , an air scent trade name that launched last November — about her house rules , how she sets up a space where she can wind off , and more .

Q: Are you a shoes-on or a shoes-off household?
I need to get sound about that — how do I get good about that ? [ Laughs ]
It is disgusting to think that we ’re taking our shoes and walk around , and then we ’re aim them off and we ’re walk around , and we ’re barefoot and then we ’re putting our infantry in our bed . I love to sit down on the flooring , too . When we have acquaintance over , usually I give everyone our couch and I sit on the floor . It ’s loathly . I have three dogs . I have nine chickens . [ Laughs ]

Q: So what are some of your house rules?
Mine is more just trying to get my kids to put their stuff on the step instead of just dump it where they total in . I feel like they just step out of their shoes mid - walk , and it ’s in the walkway , and their handbag just get dumped down . I desire their lunchboxes put in the swallow hole — and I do n’t even make them rinse it out . I will do it , or someone will do it , but do n’t leave it in your backpack .
Q: Does scent play a role in how you unwind at home?
It absolutely does . But I do n’t think it ’s just relax at the end of the Clarence Day . I think it ’s something that I wish to — when I get my kids off to school , I love to pry around my house and get affair in edict . And it ’s not about cleaning , it ’s more just how I wish things and what I require it to smell like , that ’s all a part of it . What do I desire the lighting to be like , even during the solar day ? I ’m witting about not give my light source on all day , but I want this particular lamp on , and as I get older I recollect I ’m more special , but it ’s nice to be that way . [ It ’s ] my space , and I feel more myself in something that ’s curated by me . And it ’s right . It ’s the same smell as pelt a trash of wine-coloured at the death of a long day , and even just the one sip and the feeling , you ’re like , ‘ OK , I ’ve arrived . I ’m here . ’ And I consider the same thing goes with creating your ambiance .

As I get quondam I consider I ’m more especial , but it ’s nice to be that way . [ It ’s ] my space , and I feel more myself in something that ’s curated by me .
Q: Do your rules change if you have guests coming over?
[ Laughs ] Yeah , because if no one ’s coming , we ’re likely exhaust in front of the TV .
Q: How so?
bet on how many people are come , we ’ll sit at our long board . And sometimes we ’ll sit outside .
My husband is order his fresh disc out , and he write this line in a song that was something about burn incense in the backyard , and I was like , ‘ I did n’t even notice that you noticed that I did that ! ’ And he was like , ‘ Of course I did . ’ I ’m like , ‘ You did n’t say anything about it ! ’ And he ’s like , ‘ I ’m saying it in the birdsong . Is n’t that sound enough ? ’ [ Laughs ] I guess .
I experience that the thing that I do are appreciated in the house . He would never think to do any of the things that I do . But I think the same goes for the kids . And yeah , whoever we ’re entertain or what we ’re doing — sometimes we ’re having secret plan night , and we ’ll commonly sit on the trading floor around our big round coffee table in our living way . Sometimes we want to open up all the doorway and corrode at the tenacious board .
We have this astonishing fishmonger in the vale where we live on , and we ’ll go beak up these hand curlicue kits and we ’ll just put it all out , and the Pisces the Fishes is cut up so nice , and there ’s all the accoutrements and the fresh seaweed paper , and that ’s a really fun thing . But people just set down where they land after they make their plate or their bridge player rolls , you have it away , and so I suppose it just really depends on what we ’re doing , but it ’s nice to have a space that can shift and change and you ’re always , you know , thinking of newfangled way to apply it .
