The Tree in our   three - year old miniskirt - orchard are flourish thanks in part to mass of lachrymation

When we first began to crystalize the land for our little farm in the fall of 2010 – one of our biggest care was urine – or should I say , lackof water at the property .

Without a well or natural give – we interest about how we would issue piddle to our next yield trees , mini - vineyard and landscape painting plant – not to remark the century of vegetable plants we planned on produce in the garden !

Collect Rain Water

The trees in our three-year old mini-orchard are thriving thanks in part to plenty of watering

But as we head into the 2015 growing season well-nigh 5 years later , we have yet to dig a single well – and yet –   those initial H20 worries are nothing more than a remote computer memory !

We utilize reclaimed rainwater water to irrigate our entire garden

How so ? Well ( no wordplay intended ) , with the gain of few simple   and inexpensive rainfall water collection systems set up around the farm   – we now have more than enough water stored on site for all of our needs and more .

The best part of all , these methods can be easily adapted to almost any place to handle your outside lacrimation needs as well , saving worthful raw resources from your well or city water supplying – not to mention saving you the money it takes to employ them !

It ’s also a huge benefit to your plants considering that rain body of water wo n’t contain any of the trace chemicals that many find in their tap H2O .

One of the easiest ways to begin collect water is from exist toilet and downspouts .   With the simple and inexpensive facility of a water diverter to your existing downspout , and the addition of a holding armoured combat vehicle for memory board – you could accumulate and store hundreds of congius of rainfall water every metre Mother Nature sends it down from the sky .

That is incisively what we did when we built our barn that very first yr , and it quickly allowed us to collect and store the much - need water for our newly institute trees and garden.(see : Building our Recycled Barn )

Through a simple in-line diverter - the rainwater is carried to our main capture tank

The barn itself is a standard rectangular structure measuring 32′ long x 26′ all-inclusive .

Through a simple in - line diverter – the rain is hold to our main capture tank

It   has a received gabled metal roof appraise 13′ wide x 32′ long on each side – with a 32′ section of gutter political campaign along the bottom of each side of the metal cap that to carry the rain water supply down to the side   of the barn – much like that of any standard house or outbuilding .

From there , both side empty into standard downspouts – and it ’s there at those common downspouts where our water supply - roll up witching offset .

About 5′ off of the ground , we   install a simple 2 - way in - personal line of credit diverter to the downspout ( see picture to the right ) . When the metal lever is slid to the left , the rain piddle is hive off from the normal downspout into a 275 gal storehouse tank that we turn up on the side of our barn .   And with every pelting , the tank car fills with precious water .   So much in fact , that in a individual two - time of day torrent – we can pull together as much as 125 gallons or more !

We use our home-made corn crib to store extra leaves we collect each fall.

When the tank car is full , the switch can be slid back for normal drainage .

Do n’t leave Outbuildings …

If   for some reason your theater or barn are unable to work as your compendium reference – do n’t draw a blank about using those small outbuilding you might have on your property .

Recycled water totes are a great way to store and use rainwater - just make sure your totes are clean and were not used to hold harsh chemicals that could leave harmful residues.

We use our family - made edible corn trot to salt away extra leaves we collect each gloam .

The very same process can be used on small structures such   as sheds , Gallus gallus coops , garages and more – and do n’t think for a minute that because   the buildings are belittled , that they wo n’t collect a big amount of rainwater .

We put in an 8′ division of gutter on the back of our bantam Indian corn pony – and fed the downspout into an additional tankful up by the garden . From that midget 8′ x 3′ spacious roof – we collected a full 275 gallons of piss over the course of instruction of a few voiceless spring rain – and it allowed us to irrigate our intact garden all summertime .

What to Collect The Water In ..

As for what to gather up your water system in – although there are commercial ( and expensive ) rainwater storage tanks and barrels on the market – you’re able to employ recycle plastic 55 gal drums or   large fictile totes to keep it on the gaudy .   We found our totes for $ 40 each after a warm hunt on Craigslist – and with each of them nurse up to 275 gallons of water system – we can store several   week   worth of lachrymation in   a full tote .

Recycled water totes are a great way to store and use rainwater – just check that your tote bag are clean and were not used to hold up rough chemicals that could leave harmful residue .

In addition to Craigslist or local marketing walls , you could also check with local food plants that may have their raw materials in them .

One word of caution –   no matter what you use , verify you know what was originally in your tanks or drum and that it is secure . Our tanks were used to admit maple syrup and molasses – elementary solid food products that can be cleaned out and re - used .   You will want to ward off using cooler that hold harsh chemical substance , or are of unknown origin . Most armored combat vehicle come with a 6″ threaded capital on top , and a 2″ threaded retail store valve at the bottom .   you may convert the bottom 2″ valve to take a standard garden hosepipe with a few adapters found at your local hardware store .

Keep It Dark and Keep It Covered :

You will need to keep the H2O from getting direct sunshine to keep alga from growing in the stagnant water . Algae   can only originate if there is clean .   If your tank is translucent like ours , you will want to cover it .   We use a black tarp   to cover them up once the sun and algae become a problem . Not only does it dress it up ,   but it keeps the body of water and the flow line crystal light .

You will also need to keep your store tanks closed .   Water that sits is an unfastened invitation to mosquito larvae .   Our tote derive with 6″ caps and lids on the top .   We simply reduce out the hole for the downspout , and then sealed the edge with some inexpensive foam .

Know What To Use The Water For :

We use our stored water for landscape and criminal maintenance needs – not for drinking

Be safe with what you apply your water for . We use our reclaimed weewee for watering trees , landscape and garden plants –   and for washing off equipment , etc .   Since we do not address it in any way of life , we do not use it for drinking .

Last – chequer to make certain your allowed to compile rain water in your state .   Although it sound crazy ( and is ! ) , in some states out west you are not allowed to call for rainwater water , as the water rights still belong to to the state . So to be on the safe side , check with your local or state government activity to check that it ’s effectual where you live .
