A gardener doesn’t let limited space or increasing heat and humidity stop her from creating a garden full of color and character
Hi GPODers !
I ’m not sure about all of you , but my pet part of Garden Photo of the Day is the garden diversity we get to enjoy every hebdomad . Yesterday we get word about a couple who transform 3 acres into a 21 - acre arboretum and botanical garden ( if you overlook their unbelievable post on growing pawpaw trees , definitely retard it out here ) . Today we ’re maneuver a fiddling further north to Ontario , and seeing how Katherine D Emerson does n’t countenance her little balcony space stop her from grow a aggregation of gorgeous plants .
I live in the urban village of Port Credit , in the city of Mississauga ( first city west of Toronto ) , on Lake Ontario .

My balcony face south , which has its pro and con . One of the con game is that , lately , our summers here in southern Ontario have been hot and more humid than ever with hours upon hours of sun and glare . This can be overpowering to some industrial plant and to citizenry like me who do n’t care for the heat . Last year I lost all my green and yellow bean plant as well as most of my marigolds . This year the only vegetable I ’m growing is Swiss chard . One of the pro of facing south is that , once the Dominicus has leave my side of the building ( early on to mid good afternoon ) , it ’s adorable to sit outside in the warm shade in the late good afternoon and other eve .
I choose containers and tables in upbeat vibrant colours and hot seat shock to coordinate and harmonize the place . You will notice whirligigs ( aka pinwheels , whirlygigs , windmills ) along the balcony railing . This is by - far the C. H. Best - ever pigeon check . They are flash , compassionate / humane , and reasonably 🙂
unluckily , only one to three sunrise glories flower each day , but they certainly are pretty .

With tricky conditions and even trickier space limitation , Katherine brought in some reliable colour with her fabulously colorful containers , tables , and interior decoration . A couple of her strategically - placed “ teetotum ” propose more whimsy as they protect her slice of sanctuary from pigeon .
While balcony gardening is challenging for the lack of plant quad , it should n’t be forgotten that storage space is equally as limited . Katherine needs to keep her outdoor decor and gardening supplies limited enough to fit into totes that also go on her balcony . embed aboard are a rainbow of colorful geraniums , marigolds , nasturtiums , dianthus , lobelia , and morning glory .
Katherine ’s nasturtium were just starting to flower , while dianthus looks to be comprehend in buds .

One of Katherine ’s incredible morning glories show off an unbelievable ombre issue in the light .
A seating field can be so much more than just hard-nosed with a little extra character . vivacious cushion and bright green table coiffe keep Katherine ’s colorful place cohesive .
A close look at Katherine ’s collection of colorful pots bring out more marigolds , nasturtiums , geraniums , and lobelia as well as hosta and Swiss chard .

And on the small table , a upbeat commode of polka dot plants ( Hypoestes phyllostachyacv . , Zones 10–11 or as an yearly ) bring a glad little pop of pink .
Boy , oh male child do those plants and all that colouring have some serious contention ! While most multitude might rely on this stunning view of Lake Ontario and the Credit River , Katherine knew that a plantation owner gage overflow with beautifulcalibrachoawould be a sensational improver .
Tucked off in the corner of those abundant blooming are some gorgeous hens and wench . This one looks to be the potpourri ‘ Viking ’ ( Sempervivum‘Viking ’ , Zones 5–10 ) or something similar .

On the other side , a variety so stunningly suited for the upcoming spooky time of year , cobweb hens and chicks ( Sempervivum arachnoideum‘Cobweb ’ , Zones 5–8 ) is such an interesting contrast to bright , sun - glossy calibrachoa that fence in .
give thanks you so much for share your small , but so mighty garden with us Katherine ! I always feel so inspire and encouraged to see what people can accomplish and create in a little space .
