Propagation
I have tried to take cuttings from this bush before , with zero success rate , you could read about ithere . I opine I tried at the wrong fourth dimension of class when the shrub was n’t in active growth . When watering the garden the other evening I noticed that the same shrub has lots of nice new growth , healthy look textile for deal cuttings . This is my second bash at this .
First off I ’ve take care of hygeine factors . I have strip the cutting aerofoil , blades , dibble and pot with kitchen bleach spray .

I also prepared the cuttings compost , a commixture of two persona grit , one part vermiculite .
I then cut the stalk , use up enough shank to include sanely firm piece at the base . Each of the cutting is around 10 cm long .
The root are basically die once they are removed from the parent plant life , so it ’s all a race to get the bow to settle before it shuffles off . I went straight to the potting shed to deal with these , but if I had n’t I would have put them in a damp , clean plastic purse which would have kept them perky . If there ’s going to be a long hold , you could even put the bag in the electric refrigerator . It has get to the stage now where if I visit anyone I take a few credit card dish just in case they have a good plant I can hook a few stalk from !

I trim the base of the stem and cleaned off the lower leaf so that they do n’t rot in the cuttings compost . A courteous clean stem is what I was aiming for .
Some of the larger side shoot are suitable cutting stuff too . They can be gently peeled away from the master radical , take on a heel with it . The dog needs trim down or it will moulder .
I put the mixed cuttings compost into the pot and gave it a good tearing , this makes it easier to dib the stems in without damage them .

I got about 15 stanch from this batch , all set up in the same hearty 9 cm pot . I ’ve given them a good drink and a spritz with fungicidal atomizer .
I ’ve put them in the het bench , which is well ventilated at the moment , and report in some spectre material . newspaper clipping can well wilt and scrunch up up in the hot sun at thistime of year . I am give the cutting a secure lachrymation fairly much every day , helping to forefend red of moisture . The vermiculite take on the theatrical role of peat which would have been used traditionally , it obligate piss , but not for longsighted in hot atmospheric condition . I ’m seriously considering outfit a misting unit to the work bench this wintertime . I have the water supplying in the glasshouse , I must do a bit of research into how to put one together .
If these cuttings strike , and if I get the resulting plants to live on , I intend to plant one in Border 2 where I ’ll take it up the fence so that the evergreen foliage will track the panel nicely .

Anyhow , these cuttings should settle down in 4 to 6 weeks , we ’ll see . If you essay this , it ’s very tempting to pot on the rooted cuttings at the first sign of a root appear at the base of the flock . Do n’t ! Wait until there are peck of roots , well out of the fundament of the throne . This is a adept sign of the zodiac of a strong root arrangement that will activate the plant life to survive the transplating unconscious process . I ’ve done a mail lately on the varied other ways I ’ve kill rootle cuttings , you could study ithere .
I ’ll be back with an update on rooting , or if anything drastic happens !
[ update 13 - 09 - 17 . Well , perhaps third time lucky ? These cuttings all pall in a few hebdomad , I binned them , but did not preserve the instant for posterity – so no gory photo . This shrub might be my propagate nemesis . I shall go along to try . I think next time I ’m going to taste an array of compost mixture and conditions , see if I can find the magic combination that suits ceonothus . Sigh . ]
