Mid - may is a good time to take cuttings from clematis . These will be immature softwood cut . By now many clematis have put on a squirt of growth through the spring and are catch ready to blossom . Softwood cut wilt very quickly so it helps to have everything prepared beforehand . I ’m using a cut compost made of two contribution horticultural grit to one part vermiculite . I also gave all my outfit a good clean with bleaching agent nebuliser ; cut surface , steel , scissors , dibble , mass , hands , the passel . I watered the compost once in the tray , this makes it easier to dib the stems in , and also gave it a good squirt with fungicide atomiser .
So , fittingly prepped , off to take cut .

The clematis in the picture above is a few years old and well established . It has cast off up plenty of new stems this yr . seem for a good length stem ( fresh growth ) and dilute it back to above a undecomposed strong pair of buds at a leafage knob . This will also brace the parent plant life to farm young stems , brucie bonus . go on immediately to the potting judiciary and start to trim . The advice with cuttings is usually to cut down above a folio lymph gland for the top cut , and just below the next folio lymph gland for the bottom undercut . These are nodal slip . Clematis stems are too long for this to be practical , it is next to unacceptable to manage . They would fall through about and be very tricky to get into the compost . The only alternative is to take internodal cuttings . To do this , cut above a leaf thickening for the top cut of meat , and a few atomic number 96 below that same leaf node for the bottom cut . Happily , clematis will root ok when film editing are taken in this fashion .
I ’ve take a slightly slanted cut so that the result wound is a little bigger . This is where the root will grow ( I hope … ) . Next I trimmed the leaves a little . Clematis often have lots of leaf ontogeny , several leave of absence and leaflet on each side . If I leave behind them all on they would be too fiddly to make do but more significantly the film editing would lose too much moisture .
reduce one side off exclusively , and garnish back the remaining side so that one solidifying of leave is left , and if they are a decent size , trim one of the leaflet so that two continue . If the leaves are really large it might be necessary to cut the foliage in half .

Cutting compost at the ready.
This should leave you with a short bow with one folio mathematical group .
This is the prepared cut . It should be possible to get 4 or 5 from a decent duration of theme .
Note that the very top section of the whole stem is too flimsy to use for cutting , discard . Next I spray the cut stalk , the peg , of the cutting with fungicide and dip the end in root hormone powder .

Vigorous growth, prime cuttings material.
Using a dibber I allay them in to the gritty compost , doing my best to arrange them so that the leaves were n’t affecting , to stave off chance of buncombe . I crammed in about 20 cuttings in sum , from three different form . One is unidentified , one is c. ‘ Rebecca ’ , the other is c. ‘ Mme J Correvon ’ . I will take more when the other clems I have are more well grown .
They will take root more reliably with bottom heat and by all odds take a humid atm . This is to keep the leaves moist . I ’ve put the tray of cuttings into the heated propagation bench which covers both requirements . They should root in 6 to 8 weeks . If you ’re try this , defy the enticement to see what ’s happening , do n’t drive the cuttings or plow them out . If they appear fleeceable and happy , leave them be until you see lots of ascendent fare out of the bottom of the sess , at which point in time they can be potted on .
I have done this a duet of years running , with very sporadic success . I think I suck 2 plants grown this mode through their second wintertime , they are half comme il faut industrial plant now , and one more made it through from last summer . motley final result to say the least , jolly poor survival pace . Several factors contributed to this I think . I did not have a suitable het up / humid surround , and I was also haphazard with my hygiene discipline . Having addressed both of those issues , I have high anticipation for this year . Here they are all tuck up in the red-hot bench .

Internodal cuttings.
Why not give it a try ?
I ’ll be back in a couple of months with an update on root , if they get that far …
