Six on Saturday. Looking Good in August.
l have been away for a while . Not to Brazil , as I suggested in my last post as a secure option than the UK , but to France to spend metre with my son Bertie and his beautiful Beatrice . They no longer live on the gravy holder , so thejetty gardenhas been leave behind behind , but they have managed to grease one’s palms an awe-inspiring home in south west France . They have done this in the middle of the pandemic and despite the difficulties produce by Brexit . And it is beautiful , unusual and very old . The garden has enormous potential and I will be writing about it in due course .
Coming back to England was a second of a electric shock . My garden has become a jungle , I have never descend back from holiday in August to line up so such a snarl of weeds and the lawn like a hayfield . What form of tropic weather have you been having here ? But amongst the topsy-turvydom there are some beauties which are well worth putting in an coming into court for Six on Saturday .
First , I have some lovely codonopsis . These are climbing industrial plant growing from a tuberous root . I haveCodonopsis lanceolatafrom Asia ; it has pixy -bonnet bloom which are light-green with empurpled mark inside . I believe this plant has pharmaceutical properties for the handling of various diseases . But I acquire it for the delicately beautiful flowers .

Codonopsis grey - wilsonii ‘ Himal Snow ’ comes from Nepal . It has apple - green leave and beautiful , C - white , star - mold flowers . I think next year I must investigate the codonopsis family further and see which other ones I could grow .
I love South African summer bulbs and I have several unlike forms of the lovely albuca kinfolk . There are over 100 species in this genus so there is tidy sum of pick . I trust they are know by the revolting name of guck lilies because they are overweight with a pasty juice . Albuca nelsoniiis my largest one . It has the most enormous Allium cepa - like bulb and long stems with green and white flowers .
Albuca bracteatarejoices in the ridiculous common name of ‘ Pregnant Onion ’ ; I like I know who dreams these name up . It has the most delightful , starry , immature and blanched flowers on long shank . Some member of theAlbucagenus used to be included in theOrnithagalumfamily and you may see the resemblance .

Each year I compile seeds from the charming bloom ofAlbuca shawiibecause a pot of these in flower makes a nice gift for friends . It has nodding sensationalistic blossom which are scented .
Most of my lily of the Nile are grown from seed ; they are very prosperous to grow and bloom in the 2nd or third year from germ . The parents are all large flowered unity . I believeAgapanthus africanusis not considered to be hardy , but mine have been out of doors for a few class now . I love to have them all round the garden and especially on my ‘ beach ’ in front of the shed .
The blank one seem to blossom a bit later and they are still in bud .

Each year I grow a few dissimilar cyclamen from ejaculate . The label get muddled up so I am not always sure which is which . But this summer - flowering one isCyclamen purpurascens . I think it is plausibly hardy but I uprise it in flowerpot because it is beautifully fragrant , A pot in the greenhouse fills the space with scent . It is a woodland plant so I keep it under the staging in the nursery . I also keep a few pots on my table of delectation .
Also in a pot I grow the preposterously -named annual , Zaluzianskya capensiseach year . I conceive it is constitute after a Polish plant scientist . The common name is Nox - scented phlox but I do n’t hold with plebeian gens . I do n’t think it is really a phlox at all . If you visit me in the Clarence Day sentence you may wonder why I keep a pot of these uninspiring little buds in such a salient place by our sitting country . They are a pretty tad of rich pink but still it looks a snatch scraggy . But each evening the buds open up up to bring out starry whitened flowers which have the most gorgeous fragrance . Sometimes I bring the gage inside with me when we amount indoors because I just ca n’t get enough of the marvelous fragrance . This little works comes from South Africa . It is easy to grow , I sow it straight into the throne in which it is going to live . It ’s no use have this plant down the garden somewhere , it postulate to be where you sit in the evening or by a threshold or windowpane so the evening scent can drift indoors . It is cross-pollinate by moths .
I am going to finish with another industrial plant with an amazing scent . It is my very favourite oriental lily . It is call off ‘ Casa Blanca ’ and as well as a glorious scent , it has immense everlasting bloodless flowers with huge ruby brown stamens .

So there we have six beauties well worth come home to . And I have n’t even mentioned my dahlias which are look wonderful , but they will be looking good until the frosts so we can number back to them . And now , having completed my six , I have no more self-justification to pretend I have n’t notice the weeds rampage all over the garden . Please match out thePropagatorto see other August beauties .

Welcome home ! Would it surprise you to hear I ’d be very happy to return home to a jungle , even with weeds ? We are so dry I ’m really set out to believe we ’re mid - transformation on the way to becoming a desert and find myself enquire if a move to Seattle is in the cards , although the US Pacific Northwest has been raging than it ’s been here , which is also unlikely . But I ’ll cease ranting and centre on your gorgeous blooms . The Codonopsis are very challenging , and new to me . I ’ll be looking into the Zaluzianskya – if it grows in South Africa , it may be suitable to my mood . Your Agapanthus and lilies are endearing and squeamish to see as mine are all over and done with for the season . Best wishes with the weed 😉
Mmmmm , I can smell all those scents blow through the melodic phrase from here Chloris . I have a go at it the gathering of quite a little around the beach shed . I ’ve grown zaluzianskya capensis before – a acquaintance who often holidays in Greece expect me if I could start some seeds off for her and the scent was intoxicating . So glad to hear that you escaped to France and what an invite entrance to Bertie and Beatrice ’s raw family . Sadly we ’ve just cancelled our already delayed vacation to Nice in October – I could n’t bear the idea of such a long rail journeying fatigue a masquerade 😱 Hopefully we will venture abroad next year .
What amazing and unulual plants . Many are unknown to me . i seem to have weeds all the time but especially in the last 2 weeks . Potenial garden in south west France looks anticipate too . Veronica

I wish your jungle ; it look okay to me ! How fun to escape to France , though . We have n’t traveled far for the past two age either . Hopefully , that will change in the next few years , and travel will be “ safe ” again . That Codonopsis is special ! I do n’t remember see that flora before . Nifty !
