… ……
… okay , after much word , the answer seems to be papaya tree . Or apples . Or banana tree . She would prefer apples if we lived further north … papaya if we lived in the tropics … and also raisins , but only if …
Nevermind .

In my bookI cover growing pears in Florida, along with lots of other plants.
The point is , if you were to ask a clump of mass to name their deary , I doubt very much you ’d have anyone proclaim their undying dear for the humble pear .
Personally , I did n’t care for pear until I tried them fresh and fully advanced . We corrupt a home in TN with matured pear tree diagram growing in the yard . They were some variety of dessert Pyrus communis , pale green and jaundiced when ripe , and endowed with a wonderful thaw - in - your - mouth flavor . My opinion of pears as hard , watered - down apples with unpleasant texture was transform .
Now I roll in the hay pear .

When I moved to Florida , I was afraid I would n’t be able-bodied to grow any varieties worth eat up . Fortunately , I was wrong . you may turn skillful pear from about the centre of the state compass north . Further south than that and you ’ll have chill hr issues and may have to mess around with forcing dormancy by leaf stripping , etc … and that ’s a topic for another Clarence Day . Growing pears in Florida is well-fixed than you might think .
Unlike Apples , Peaches , Plums and Nectarines , pear are comparatively precaution - detached trees . The biggest disease way out they face is “ fire blight , ” a tight bacterial contagion that usually get going at the ends of branches and work on its way down towards the bole . as luck would have it , if you ’re observant , you may often steer off the contagion with a good twain of pruning shear and a sprayer - bottle of alcohol .
In my bookI cover growing pears in Florida , along with good deal of other plant life .

desexualize your pruners with alcoholic drink , then cut at least 12″ further down each infected offshoot than the closest patch of infection . The contagion is promiscuous to discover since it looks like the name implies : coal brownish leaf and forest . Make certain to fix your shears between each cut so you do n’t inadvertently pass around the disease .
Once you ’ve removed all the infected woodwind , fire it . Do n’t throw it in your compost or have it fall around the base of the tree . You want it go .
Beyond the occasional brush with ardor blight , Florida has some good pear varieties to get excited about . We can develop the Greco-Roman Kieffer pear , the former - fashioned Pineapple pear ( which apparently has a sense of touch of pineapple flavor to the fruit ) , gourmet Oriental pears and other salutary varieties like Hood , Spaulding and the low - iciness UF cultivar Flordahome .
On my property , I ’ve planted a Hood , a Kieffer and a Flordahome . I ’m about to add an Asiatic and a Pineapple this week .
When you implant pear tree ( or any other ) tree , make certain you keep thegrass back from around the body to a distance of 4 - 5′. Grass willconsume your tree ’s resourcefulness and choke it … do n’t let it do that . Aring of mulch is always a good idea .
pear take a few year to get big enough to deliver well , so plant them as soon as you may . The wait is worth it . We used to harvest hundreds of pounds off our two trees in Tennessee . That made for a lot of delicious pear butter … salsa … slices in sirup … dried yield and Perry ( pear wine-coloured ) .
Finally … pear Tree are also beautiful beyond their functionality . I ’ve come in to love their interesting cast , the rough barque , the wild branches and the endearing flush in bound .
Though they ’re an well-to-do survival tree for Florida , they do n’t make my top three ( which are mulberries , loquat and persimmons ) but they ’re a very close four at the moment . flora a few for extra - good pollenation and redundance … and you ’ll be enjoying fruit before you know it .
Growing Pyrus communis in Florida may not be as glamourous as growing oranges … but they ’re well worth it .
