More than a decade ago , a garden began to take shape on a match of contiguous vacant plenty on the turning point of Van Brunt and King Streets in the Red Hook neighborhood of Brooklyn , New York . At the time , Red Hook was an area with a few less residents , one less IKEA , and several more vacant loads than subsist today .

Starting a garden on a vacant lot is fundamentally no different than starting a garden anywhere else . It requires the ingathering of material and uninterrupted maintenance . Some gardeners are granted permission to plant on mickle awaiting development , while others are basically nester taking advantage of someone else ’s nonperformance .

For year , fantastic urban plant , having adapted to the disturbed site weather condition , blanketed the King Street loads . These uncultivated plants better the quality of the soil and render scrounge cannon fodder and a home ground to insect , birds , and little mammals , yet it was an unwelcoming landscape painting to most humans .
In 1998 , the owner of the King Street lots grant a neighbor to sort out the giantism and start a garden . The buildings that once stood there were long gone , but their foundations lay beneath the debris and decaying plant matter that had accumulated over the previous years of neglect .

ASalix albawas plant alongside one edge of the lots to help prevent implosion therapy in the basement of a neighboring house . Today the tree diagram bear nearly sixty feet tall , offers flood mitigation , and provides much appreciated spook to garden visitors during raging summer days .
Fruit trees were placed across the stacks and basis covers were planted to discourage weeds . brick were relieve from the sometime foundation and were made into retaining walls that added shape and provide pathway and seating area . An old perforate lavation machine drum was donate and became a fire pit . The derelict land began to take shape as a place for meeting and resting , and through logical effort , it became a garden . Upon the addition of healthy soil , veg gardening later became the prevailing plantings in a neighbourhood still miss a promiscuous admission to fresh garden truck .

Gardeners get back season after time of year to be given to individual plots and to help the maintenance of the communal areas . Dues were established for the substance abuser of each garden plot of ground to divvy up the onus of paying for requisite such as garden putz , coolers , and to pay for the neighbour ’s body of water notice .
Each gardener had a particular way of growing . Some remove the more disorderly advance and spread seeds erratically , relying on the whim of the rain and sun to fashion a garden . Others meticulously weed , watered , and pruned . All were expression of the individual fictional character doing the sowing . Perhaps the singular corporate imperative form was “ not to see anything die on the vine , ” meaning that if you catch a fruit on anyone ’s secret plan that was on the brink of decompose , it was considered average game to take it and wipe out it yourself .
Recently the King Street Garden ’s gates have been build up with a young lock . The layer have all been cover with sand , and the property owner has finally , after 13 years , reclaimed his dimension , hop-skip to betray the lots for future development .

As the gardeners mourn the garden they once nurtured so tenderly , they also mourn their place of collective ritual , as more than just plants were lost . Planting a garden is also an investiture in the future , and in this face it was a apportion investiture . No more yearly Independence Day crawfish cookouts , no more wedding , and no more harvests will be celebrated at the garden .
What I ca n’t excite is the feeling that what was so really special about the King Street Garden was its ephemeral quality and yet realize that horticulture for any period of meter was worth the endeavor . I like to retrieve that the impermanency of the garden make fertile grounds for experimentation . With nothing to lose , the gardeners had everything to gain . The success of the garden was due to the gardener ’ commitment class after yr , to keep grow , despite the betting odds .
