Harvey is the authorof this book , which I extremely urge for anyone concerned in raising chickens :

The little - Scale Poultry Flock
Chickens apart , I ’m a big lover of blanket crops , though I do n’t always use them the way others do . I apply perennials and yearly , depending on the localisation – and rather than tilling everything under , I oftenchop plants down as mulch , then put them around mulch - loving perennials or the next season ’s crops .
Year Round Cover Crop Suggestions
In an annual context , say you need to grow black pepper in the bounce . In fall , you might set a premix of lentil , rye grass , mustard greens , turnips , chickpeas , garlic , peas , fava beans , and other cool - season crops . When the weather is strong enough for capsicum pepper plant , harvest whatever you wish of those plants , then start chopping holes into the light-green mess and planting your common pepper . As the coolheaded - season crop fade , they ’re still protecting the ground from erosion and the baking heat of the sun . Some may be tot nitrogen , and others ( like mustard ) are deter pests . Some might just be good for add up humous to the land ( like rye whiskey , with its monolithic origin system ) , whereas still others are practiced food for the mesa .
It ’s too stale for baby citrus fruit Tree … but not too stale for turnips , pea plant , ryegrass and other cool - time of year soil - edifice back crop
In the affectionate time of year , as you look forwards to perhaps set cabbage orbroccoliin the fall … plant cover crop such as bean , buckwheat , sunflower , marigolds , pigeon peas , etc . The more varieties , the better . I ’m all aboutintercropping .

The Small-Scale Poultry Flock
flop now , I ’ve got a big patch of cool - season covering plants ( see above ! ) die that will be converted to clavus in the leaping . It ’s not only good for your dirt – it ’s a swell use of blank space that might otherwise be vacant . There ’s no apology not to garden year - round here !
