One of the serious ways to learn to garden is by following someone who has been garden in your orbit for a foresighted time . Find someone who inspires you , who does n’t mind you asking wad of interrogative . Yesterday , my Thomas Kid and I had the chance to do just that !
I first met Zela at our Church almost seven twelvemonth ago , I was a honeymooner who found myself in a very small town . I quickly noticed she was n’t someone who sit down down very often . She is always loan a hired man , clean a coffee bean spillway , or greet someone at the front door . Although she would be consider “ retirement age ” you would not make love it ! She loves the Lord , her husband , girl , son - in - law and especially her two endearing grandkids . Last class I visit her garden for the first clip and was immediately awestruck . After my visit , I had a load of wise produce . She revolutionize me . I called my husband overwhelmed by the generosity and told him , “ I have a raw retirement goal , I desire to be like Zela ! ”
Here is Zela ’s garden from the front .

Here it is from the back side , I can not wait to see it in full production again . Stay tuned .
She has several types of beans , loot snap pea , tomatoes , Citrullus vulgaris , a few types of squash , herbs , cucumbers , pepper , sunflowers , carrots , beets , and I am certain more I am draw a blank . The highlight of this trip was her Sugar Snap Peas . They are perfumed and juicy , all but one picky shaver enjoyed them .
She made her treillage with rebar she pick up from a grammatical construction land site , line it with wire fencing material and secured it by twine a rope to reserve it up ! She is always repurposing .

I ’m looking fore to her black pepper !
We run across the watermelon blossoms !
Here is another treillage she made for her beans .

For her Cucumis sativus , she also scored this from a construction land site She say next year she might fish the treillage towards the fencing the , so as the cucumber mature they will hang down and make it easy to pick !
One thing I appreciate about how she gardens , is she plants what she loves . Which includes a beautiful Lilly Garden so she can partake flowers as well as eatable . This is the main garden , but she has fruit Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree , primer cherry , garlic , blackberry , hoot , herb in various plater and plenty more . Here is a planter she has ground cherry along with flowers .
This is a close - up of her primer cherries .

I have been debating planting Pyrus communis in my back - yard and after seeing hers I have been convinced it ’s now a necessity . I need to engraft pear !
Zela also has chicken , which by nature was the highlight for my tyke . On top of the chicken coop , she is growing Hardy Kiwi . This was the first time I have seen sturdy Actinidia chinensis , it provides wonderful shade for the crybaby .
I asked Zela , where she learned to garden . Who inspired her ? I find out out her grandparents were Amish and her mother raised her Mennonite . Her mother was her inspiration , and her mother learned it from her grandfather . They have been garden in this area for generations ! If you are new to horticulture or have moved zone , find someone who is passionate about gardening and does n’t mind you following them around asking lots of questions .

give thanks you Zela for passing on your cognition and passion with us !
